Core People UX Project Highlights

Building scalable and intuitive experiences for Google's heart and core—its people.

When I was at Google, I had an amazing time working as an interaction designer on the Core People UX team for 3.5 years. During this time, I worked on modernizing and re-structuring the future for compensation (gComp + Prosper), performance management (Perf), learning and development (L&D/Grow), and the talent ecosystem. All of these projects were tremendous joint efforts across UX design, content, research, engineering, product, and people operations.

I've included some snapshot summaries of my favorite projects and only be show in-depth upon request.

COMPENSATION & REWARDS

Evolution of gComp

gComp is the platform where managers plan for all Googlers' compensation once a year within an extremely compressed timeline. It is a hierarchical process where each manager can provide comp recommendations within an approx. 2-day window, before it rolls up to the next manager in the org chain, and so on; however, it gets even more complex once it rolls up to higher levels.

I along with another senior designer, Maria Z., were responsible for building out all facets of this new platform. Since managers do not see the tool or think about compensation planning deeply year-round, the user experience has to be seamless and provide all necessary guidance and data to avoid confusion. The existing platform doesn't provide a holistic view of compensation planning and has been difficult for managers to navigate.

With the new system, managers are able to create more informed decisions for their teams and ensure that there is fairness across the board. Working on this multi-year project was an extensive effort that involved not only the product, research, and engineering teams, but Core accessibility and the Equity team as well.

The project is currently under development by the engineering team and is slotted to roll out to all Google managers in the near future.

LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT

Learning Collections Builder

Googlers have access to an assortment of internal and external courses ranging from topics such as leadership all the way to crocheting. Googler instructors and learning admins were missing an easy way to assemble their courses and build out rich curriculums. The current collections builder took users too much time to figure out and were unable to scale with the curriculums they wanted to make.

I led design for learning collections for both the Learning Management System (admin side) and Grow (learner-facing) that helped managers, learning admins, Googlers/Learners, and instructors build organized and curated groups of learning activities.

With this, Googlers are able to assemble collections from learning activities across providers such as gLearn, LinkedIn Learning, Sales Mastery, PeopleDev, and much more.

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

Reimagining Google's Perf process

Perf (now known as Grad) at Google is quite the buzz for a couple of months out of the year; however, the structure and processes could not scale at the rate that the company was growing. The process oftentimes left Googlers feeling an enormous amount of stress and misaligned with their growth and work objectives.

I collaborated closely with the UX research and design team to observe calibration sessions, survey a diverse set of Googlers in different roles, and developed prototypes to test future concepts with Googlers. This required redesigning all domains of evaluation, promotion, development, and also connecting it to compensation and MyGoogle.

As a result of synthesizing more than 50 research sessions, we conceptualize what an ideal Perf process looked like while taking into account Googler needs and business priorities. Although this project has evolved over the years, most of the initial concepts that I developed have been implemented and hopefully will streamline work in the future and give Googlers back their precious time to focus on more of what truly matters.

TALENT ECOSYSTEM

An interconnected ecosystem for internal talent tools

Google has more than 10+ career-related internal tools to help with Googlers' development and growth. Since the experience is so  fragmented, most tools are largely unknown and Googlers tend to just gravitated towards the more popular tools such as Perf and Grow.

I was tasked to create a vision of what a cohesive career and talent hub could look like. I worked closely with the product director Alice Y. to draft a Google career hub that enables Googlers to proactively build and grow their careers, leading to improved employee satisfaction and retention, while supporting the company's long-term growth goals and internal mobility.

This project influenced the different Core People UX products and help drive unification for the team.
